Kamala Harris has recently faced calls for impeachment, with critics most prominently citing Harris’ failure to invoke the 25th Amendment to address concerns regarding President Biden’s mental fitness.
Critics noted that her inaction represents a significant neglect of her constitutional responsibilities as vice president.
Some argued that the vice president has a duty to assess the president’s competency, claiming Joe Biden has not been functioning effectively for an extended period of time. Critics asserted that Harris and the Democratic Party as a whole has failed to act on their constitutional obligations by not removing him from office.
Many believe that Donald Trump’s impeachment served as a precedent. Trump was impeached for actions regarding Ukraine, where he allegedly threatened to withhold military aid unless Ukraine investigated the Biden family’s ties to Burisma, connected to Hunter Biden.
“Using the powers of his high office, President Trump solicited the interference of a foreign government, Ukraine, in the 2020 United States Presidential election,” the impeachment charges read.
“He did so through a scheme or course of conduct that included soliciting the Government of Ukraine to publicly announce investigations that would benefit his reelection, harm the election prospects of a political opponent, and influence the 2020 United States Presidential election to his advantage.”
Supporters of Trump’s impeachment framed his actions as an abuse of power, arguing that leveraging foreign policy for electoral gain undermines the integrity of American elections and should not involve manipulating aid to allies.
The House of Representatives ultimately charged Trump with soliciting foreign interference in the 2020 election by pressuring Ukraine, raising concerns about the misuse of U.S. government resources for his reelection campaign while harming political opponents.
In 2024, the conflict between Israel and Hamas has drawn scrutiny toward the Biden Administration’s hesitance to fully support Israel amid recent hostilities, which have resulted in significant casualties and hostage situations initiated by Hamas.
Critics have especially noted the inconsistencies in Biden’s foreign policy. While the administration has aggressively supported Ukraine’s battle against Russia, it has simultaneously urged Israel to de-escalate.
Concerns have also arisen from the Biden administration’s pressure on Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, suggesting that failure to comply could lead to a withdrawal of U.S. military assistance.
“We have seen Israel make changes before, and when they make changes, humanitarian assistance can increase,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.
“It’s no secret that Hamas takes control of humanitarian aid. We’ve already published here tapes of Hamas, in which you hear them say themselves they have no more room in their warehouses,” Channel 12 News’ Almog Boker said.
