President Joe Biden has allegedly authorized Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles from the U.S. to target locations inside Russia, removing earlier limitations on their use.
This decision may escalate the conflict just before President-Elect Donald Trump takes office, who has indicated a desire to negotiate a peace settlement.
Biden had previously limited such strikes due to concerns about escalating tensions with Russia, especially regarding nuclear threats.
The approval comes amid increased Russian attacks on Ukraine and is seen by some as a response to North Korean troops entering Russia.
Meanwhile, Trump is expected to use funding as leverage to pressure Ukraine into negotiations, despite Ukrainian President Zelensky’s refusal to cede any territory.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “President Biden has committed to making sure that every dollar we have at our disposal will be pushed out the door between now and January 20th.”
