US Soldier Pleads Guilty After Fleeing to North Korea

Travis King, a soldier in the U.S. Army, recently received a 12-month confinement sentence after admitting guilt to charges of desertion and assaulting an officer.

A military judge indicated that without the plea deal, he could have faced up to 20 years.

Nine additional charges, including possession of child sexual images, were dismissed in the plea agreement.

“Travis is grateful to his friends and family who have supported him, and to all outside his circle who did not pre-judge his case based on the initial allegations,” attorney Franklin D. Rosenblatt said.

King crossed into North Korea from South Korea in July 2023 after being released from a South Korean prison.

He became the first American detained there in nearly five years.

King was held for 71 days before being returned to the U.S.
