Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has been subpoenaed as part of an investigation into the state’s management of federal child nutrition programs linked to the Feeding Our Future (FOF) fraud scandal.
Under Walz watch as governor, there was over $250 million misused as part of a COVID-19 fraud scandal in Minnesota.
The fraud scheme that resulted in a quarter-billion-dollar loss from the Minnesota Department of Education’s (MDE) Feeding Our Future program.
“At least a quarter billion dollars was stolen by fraudsters,” Billy Glahn, adjunct policy fellow with Minnesota-based Center of the American Experiment, said.
“The question, of course, came up: How did the state Department of Education let out $250 million out the door to people who were later convicted of defrauding the program? The legislative auditor took this on as one of her projects and did this report looking at how the department oversaw a single one of these nonprofits involved.”
The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce is seeking documents related to Walz’s oversight during significant misappropriation of funds meant for child nutrition during the COVID-19 pandemic.
FOF, a nonprofit, is accused of diverting tens of millions of dollars intended for feeding children into personal luxuries.
Despite criticism of his administration’s actions, Walz claims there was no wrongdoing and attributes the oversight failures to a lack of thoroughness rather than malfeasance.
